Problem 1 Special Information

This page is for Problem 1, Longshot Solution

Site Entrances

Pelz Gym, the performance venue for Problem 1, is a construction site.  SCSC broke ground for a new Health and Human Services building that will surround two sides of the existing gym. While the interior of Pelz Gym is not affected at this time, we will have to exercise care and caution entering and exiting the building.

Vehicle Entrance

The driveway is on the north side of Pelz Gym, between the gym and the Fitch Street parking garage.

Prop Drop

  • Pull forward in the driveway to the small bus stop shelter.
  • Unload your props and move your vehicle to the adjacent parking garage.
  • If vehicles start to back up in the Prop Drop area, we will ask you to move forward to the parking lot.
  • An adult must remain with the vehicle used to transport props at all times.
  • All parts of a problem solution and the containers must fit through a doorway that measures 28” x 78”, and must be able to stand or be placed in an upright position in a standard room (ceilings 7.5-8 feet). This applies to all containers holding the team’s solution. No alterations (e.g., removing center posts in doorways) will be permitted.
  • Refer to the 2020 Competition map for more detail

Team Entrance

Teams will enter Pelz through one of two doors on the driveway (north) side of the building. Entrance will be determined by the team’s site assignment:

Div. 1A / 2A – center double door on the driveway (north) side of the gym.

Div. 1B / 2B / 3 – double door farthest right on the driveway (north) side of the gym.

Audience Entrance

Spectators will enter Pelz through the door farthest left on the driveway side of the building or the door farthest right on the opposite side of the building. The Main Entrance to Pelz is part of the construction area and will not be used.

There will be volunteers located in this area to assist teams and spectators.

Competition

We were faced with an unusual set of circumstances in Problem 1 this year:

  1. Large registration – 35 teams.
  2. Uneven registration – 23 division 1 teams and 11 division 2 teams.
  3. Limited number of performance areas to meet the problem requirements.

Our solution is as follows:

Division 1

  • The 23 division 1 teams were randomly divided into two groups
  • Half of the teams will perform in division 1A, and half will perform in division 1B
  • The first place in each division (1A, 1B) will be invited to attend World Finals

Division 2

  • The 11 division 1 teams were randomly divided into two groups.
  • Half of the teams will perform in division 2A, and half will perform in division 2B.
  • The first place in each division (2A, 2B) will be invited to attend World Finals.

General

Floor Damage:

All items in the staging area will be inspected prior to the beginning of the presentation. If it is determined that any item could potentially cause floor damage, the teams must address the concern to the satisfaction of the judging team prior to the start of presentation.

Forms:

Teams must have all forms ready to present to the Pre-Staging Area judge when so requested. The forms, in legible condition, include:

    1. Three copies of the Style Form.
    2. One Cost Form.
    3. One Outside Assistance form.
    4. Six copies of the Team’s Required List (B.15).
    5. Any Team-Specific clarifications.
